His obituary notices call him “the Head of the Boston Bar.” Judge Story, in his “American Precedents” cites more from his opinions that from any other except his brother-in-law. He was on all leading committees. Andrew Stamp, the Stamp Act Commissioner, was brought before him as magistrate and forced to sign an agreement not to carry out the law. Hawthorne describes this in “Grandfather’s Chair.” President Adams said that had he lived, his would have been one of the monumental names in the Revolution. Copley did his portrait in wig and gown.
